Android 17 begins Google's shift from a conventional mobile operating system toward an intelligence system. AppFunctions can expose supported app actions to assistants such as Gemini, enabling multi-step workflows while keeping apps at the center of the experience.
For everyday users, Bubbles can turn apps into floating windows, large-screen behavior is more consistent, and new memory controls reduce the risk of one app consuming excessive RAM. Session-based contact and media selection also limits the need for broad permanent permissions.
The release arrived first on supported Pixel devices in June 2026, with partner devices following on different schedules. Android 17 also improves CameraX, Media3, runtime efficiency, and security, but the visible experience still depends on each manufacturer's interface. Pixel owners receive the cleanest version; Samsung, OPPO, Xiaomi, vivo, and other users should check their brand's rollout schedule before expecting the same features.
